Kimcha D’pischa

Kimcha D’pischa (Aramaic for “flour for Passover” and also known as “maos chittin” [money for wheat]) is the charity appeal held before Passover so as to help the needy and poor families with the many and large holiday expenses.
This mitzvah is written in the Remo, Orach Chaim 429: “It is customary in all Jewish communities to raise maos chittin and give to the city’s poor for Pesach. And therefore every Jew must give Kimcha D’pischa to the poor.” 

This obligation is learned from the Torah (Deuteronomy 16): “For six days you shall eat matzos and on the seventh day shall be an assembly to the L-rd, your G-d; you shall not perform labor… and you shall rejoice before the L-rd your G-d – you, your son, your daughter, your slave, your maidservant, and the Levite who is within your gates, and the proselyte, the orphan, and the widow who are among you, in the place the L-rd, your G-d, will choose to rest His Name there.” And Rashi explains based on the Midrash – “The Levite, and the proselyte, and the orphan, and the widow – these are My four against your four – your son, your daughter, your slave, and your maidservant. If you make Mine rejoice, I will make yours rejoice. 

Throughout the years, Agudas Achim Anshei America Yerushalayim made sure to give special tzedakah – Kimcha D’pischa to the city’s poor, destitute and needy, orphans and widows, before Passover as part of the organization’s charitable activities. 
Agudas Achim now distributes Kimcha D’pischa to the highest standards, that is given to the poor and needy, orphans and widows, using gift vouchers for purchasing food so they will be able to fulfill the mitzvos of Passover in an honorable way.
